How to Use a Multiport Valve on Pool Filter

Release time:2023.08.31

A multiport valve is an essential component of a swimming pool sand filter system. It is a multi-position valve that allows you to control the flow of water through the filter, allowing you to have functions such as filtering, backwashing, rinsing, draining, and more. In this article, we'll go over how to use a multiport valve and what you should and shouldn't do when doing so.

Functions of Multiport Valve

The following are the most common functions of a multiport valve:

Filter: In this position, water is pushed into the filter tank, passes through the filter media, exits the tank, and returned back to the pool.

Backwash: The setting cleans the filter by flushing out dirt and debris accumulated in the filter medium and sending it out through the backwash line.

Rinse: A setting to be used after backwashing a sand filter. It will flush out and rinse the remaining dust particles to prevent dust from blowing back into your pool.

Waste/Drain: Removes water or debris directly.

Recirculate: Water is drawn in from the pump and returned directly to the pool, skipping the filter entirely.

Closed: This is a rarely used position that simply means that water cannot enter the valve.

Winterize/Off: Used to close the valve in preparation for winter.

How To Use a Multiport Valve

In fact, once your installer has installed your multiport valve for the sand filter, it's not difficult to use, it's just a little time-consuming. This article will concentrate on using the multiport valve for the most common backwash functions.

Step 1: Before selecting a valve setting, make sure the pump is OFF and always depress the handle before turning.

Step 2: Make certain that you always turn the handle clockwise. Switching between clockwise and counterclockwise rotation will unseat and damage the gaskets inside the valve. Turn the handle to the "backwash" position.

Step 3: Restart the pool pump. You will notice water coming out.

Step 4: Allow the water to drain from the backwash port and through the backwash hose for approximately 90 seconds, or until the water runs clear.

Step 5: Turn off the pool pump.

Step 6: Turn the valve handle to the "rinse" position.
Step 7: Restart the pool pump. You will rinse the filter for approximately 30-60 seconds.

Step 8: Turn off the pool pump.

Step 9: Return the multiport valve to the "filter" setting. You can now restart the pump on a regular basis.

Despite the fact that it is a simple backwash thing, it is a complex 9-step operation that frequently confuses people. It is also possible to damage the equipment if the procedure is not followed precisely.

Actually, there are more user-friendly multiport valves for pool owners that do not require any professional knowledge to operate.

Next Generation of Multiport Valve: 1-Touch Automatic Filter Valve

Aquagem developed the I-Wash, the industry's first full-touch automatic filter valve for the leading visual and interactive user experience. It features six functions of multiport sand filter valve: filter, backwash, rinse, recirculation, waste, and closed. This eliminates the need for manual valve adjustments and pump switching, allowing users to enjoy 1-Touch backwash and fully immerse themselves in the joy of swimming without any complicated operations.

Equipped with pressure detection and timer settings, the I-Wash automatically initiates backwashing when the filter reaches the pre-set pressure limits or based on the user's designated time settings. Simply 1-Setting for 365-Day Clear.

Besides, with unique InverClear tech created by Aquagem, I-Wash works collaboratively with the Aquagem’s inverter pool pump, integrating the circulation and filtration system into one-stop smart control.
